Against the backdrop of a Gulf in crisis — ravaged by historic flooding in the wake of a “1,000-year” storm, and the 11-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina — President Obama’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) currently plans in March 2017 to hold an online auction to sell new leases for “all available acres (47 million)” to drill for oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico to the highest bidder.
CLICK HERE TO MAKE THE CALL to urge President Obama, Sec. of Interior Sally Jewell, and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Director Abigail Hopper to cancel the March 2017 lease sale, and all future lease sales to drill in the Gulf.
Here’s a sample script:
“Hi, my name is _____, and I’m calling to urge you to halt upcoming all oil and gas lease sales to drill in the Gulf of Mexico, and remove drilling in the Gulf of Mexico from your five-year plan. This scheduled March 2017 sale of “all available acres” of the central Gulf of Mexico for offshore oil and gas drilling would threaten Gulf residents, wreak havoc on the environment, and deepen the climate crisis. I urge you to halt the March 2017 lease sale, and remove drilling in the Gulf of Mexico from your five-year plan, to protect our communities and our climate future.”
